Introduction Assignment - First Semester

DUE MONDAY SEPT 9th

TASK - Showcase who you are through symbols, colours, shapes and design, all incorporated around a FOUR letter word. You will need to showcase the 5 elements of design we have covered so far. (Line, Shape, Value, Form and Texture)



1. Brainstorm a list of your interests. Write everything down. You don’t need to use everything, but we want to practice divergent thinking, saying yes to all possible ideas.  Some prompts to work through are listed below.


  1. What do you enjoy?
  2. What are your interests and hobbies?
  3. What are your political or religious views?
  4. What activities are you involved with?

2. Divide your square into four equal spaces. Show your interests in a creative way while spelling
out a letter of your name!

3. Make sure you put your absolute best effort forth. Remember this is high school art class!!
Craftsmanship is super important! Show me that your are trying your best!

Success Criteria
1. 5 elements are represented (line, shape, value, form and texture)
2. Your word connects to you in some way (Content)
3. You have put care and effort into you piece (Craftsmanship)
4. You have answered the 3 reflection questions

1. How does your word connect to you?
2. Pick one element of design and explain how you have used it in this artwork.
3. What do you like the most about your artwork. Explain.


Introduction Assignment - Second Semester

DUE MONDAY SEPT 9th

TASK - Showcase who you are through symbols, colours, shapes and design, all incorporated around your name. You will manipulate mixed media creatively to present a sense of your personality and showcase who you are.

1. Brainstorm a list of your interests. Write everything down. You don’t need to use everything, but we want to practice divergent thinking, saying yes to all possible ideas.  Some prompts to work through are listed below.


    1. What do you enjoy?
    2. What are your interests and hobbies?
    3. What are your political or religious views?
    4. What activities are you involved with?


2. Thumbnails - Choose 10 - 15 words you brainstormed. You should circle them or highlight them.  
These are words that you think you could visually represent in a creative way. Using thumbnails
(small sketches), draw out some ideas to represent these words.  You could also start to think how these words could incorporate the initials of your name.

3. MIXED MEDIUM - can you use VARIETY of mediums? (paint, collage, markers, pencil crayon,
recycled material, etc)
MEDIUM - the material used to create the art work (ex. paint, crayons, markers, graphite)

4. Show your interests in a creative way while spelling out a letter of your name!

. Break the Frame - this is a compositional technique to create more visual interest. When collaging your letters, have them come above and below the rectangular background.

6. Make sure you put your absolute best effort forth. Remember this is high school art class!! Craftsmanship is super important! Show me that your are trying your best!

Success Criteria
  1. I did my best to brainstorm many ideas and used the thumbnails to plan my work. I have handed in my brainstorming and thumbnail sketches.
  2. I have used a VARIETY of materials
  3. I have created a name plate, that represents my interests and shows something about my personality
  4. I have broke the frame to create an interesting composition.
  5. I have used the 3 C's in my work (Content, Composition and Craftsmanship)
  6. I was respectful in the use of materials. Using them properly and returning them where they belong.
  7. I have handed in my reflection questions. They are written in complete sentences.
